Trends in the Online Gambling Industry
Society has always had varying opinions and laws on gambling, both in terms of sports betting and of casino news. However, the advent of the internet rendered many of the gambling laws fuzzy and ambiguous, because it could not have been anticipated that sports betting and gambling would migrate to the internet in the 1990s’. There are currently hundreds, if not thousands of such online gambling sites offering sports betting, casino gambling, UK no deposit and more based in many Caribbean countries and parts of Europe.
Although all these headquarters are based overseas from the wide marketplace available in the States, the United States contributes a huge portion of the reported revenue for these online casinos and gambling sites. The online gambling industry boasts even more revenue than the giants of the land-based casino industry in Las Vegas, Nevada and Atlantic City. In fact, the 2005 fiscal year estimates the revenue of the online gambling industry at over 30-times what was reported from land-based casinos in Las Vegas.
This is a huge threat to Las Vegas, the pioneer of gambling operations within the United States, which had monopolized the industry as it was the only legal place of operations in the nation. As laws changed, casinos, betting salons, state lotteries, and other gambling operations sprung up around the nation, but Las Vegas still dominated the industry, at least up until online casinos came about.
These varying state laws do not affect online gambling facilities, however. Since there is no federal law regulating online gambling, these online casinos can utilize loopholes in the inconsistencies of state laws to maintain legality.
The threat posed by online gambling was heeded by Las Vegas casinos, though, and recognizing the impending doom, the casinos jumped on the bandwagon. Some of the land-based casinos purchased off-shore online gambling facilities to take advantage of their profits.
The initial fear and hesitance felt towards the powerful force of online gambling was met at this time with acceptance (and more importantly, opportunity) in the eyes of the land-based casinos. Many Las Vegas casinos are now supporting the legalization of online gambling, so that they can operate within the United States and maximize profit, while minimizing costs, and opening up to a whole new demographic of potential players by offering them the chance to play at their casino from their very own home.
Despite the Las Vegas casinos’ support of online gambling, the issue is still met with much opposition, and that is not likely to change. The momentum and force of online gambling, however, is a stronger force, and the online gambling industry will continually grow and adapt, gathering a strong user base and running strong, despite what laws are put into place.
Although one could say that whatever be the result of these new developments in the casino gambling business, gamers can still be sure of their gambling fix. Possibly, if the regulation proposed is approved, there would be a lot more security in gambling online since it is now in compliance with the US laws. Like before, casino gambling has proven itself to be a dynamic and ever-changing industry.
